Why do people call Sex ed Talking about the birds and the bees?

Where did the saying talking about the birds and bees start being linked to sex ed talks? For a start birds dont ever do it with bees and who is the bird and who is the bee and Why?

Anyone any sensible answers out there?Why do people call Sex ed Talking about the birds and the bees?
Coyness. Birds lay eggs; women ovulate. Bees move pollen around inseminating flowers; men inseminate women.

The old-fashioned idea was that you could explain to children and get them to understand reproduction in nature, which would be far less embarrassing (for the teacher) than describing the mechanics of human sexual activity.

This dates back to when many teachers were single, teaching in single sex schools, having been educated themselves in single sex schools. My older sister went to a convent school (in the late 60's) and they studied human biology, but when it came to reproduction they were only told about rabbits.....Why do people call Sex ed Talking about the birds and the bees?
i always wondered this as well..after being told ..i was dead scared of being stung by a bee incase i got pregnant
From wikipedia: ';In some cases the choice of birds and bees may be because they provide a ready metaphor for insemination (pollination) and childbirth (hatching). However it may be called the ';birds and the bees'; in that it is simply the facts of nature; many creatures have sexual intercourse: birds, bees, humans, and a huge variety of others.';
BIRDS DO IT BEES DO IT EVEN EDUCATED FLEEEEES DO IT LETS DO IT LETS LETS FALL IN LOVE. Dose that ring any bells???????
I always wondered the same thing
birds and the bees=nature and what's natural (sex)
it is like the 50's way of talking about sex...

birds and bees land on each flower and take the pollen from one flower to the next, inseminating all the flowers
first sight
It's an excuse not to have to explain, what most don't understand anyway. ~
This reminds me of an old joke........

Mummy tells Daddy to tell their youngest son about sex, but Daddy is too embarrassed. S Daddy asks eldest son to tell his younger brother about the ';Birds and the Bees';.

This is how the conversation ensued.

Big Bro. ';I'm going to tell you about the ';Birds and the Bees';

Little Bro. ';Wow';

Big Bro. ';you know what Mummy and Daddy do in bed?';

Little Bro. ';Yeah';

Big Bro.

';Well the birds and bees do that.

Ho Ho
